Thiouraye, or Senegalese incense, is a key element in the cultural heritage of Senegal and many African countries.

There are 2 solutions to burn thiouraye; the "modern" method (more practical for Westerners) or the so-called "ancestral" traditional method (authentic but which requires a little more preparation).

• The "modern" method consists in burning a coal pellet (coal for Narghilé for example) in an incense burner; that you can also find at Perles d'Afrique.

  When the charcoal is no longer burning, but still hot, place a little thiouraye on top which, by the heat, will exhale all its fragrance.

• The "ancestral" method consists of using a traditional "Ande" (African pottery made of terracotta). The latter is filled with ashes. Place a few pieces of glowing embers there, cover with ashes and then put a little bit of thiouraye on top.

• Thiouraye can also be used cold in a potpourri.
